vinyl to mp3 recording problems

I'm converting vinyl to Mp3 using a laptop w/out a
line-in jack so the mic-in seems to be my only option.
However, I'm having trouble setting the recording volume
low enough to prevent distortions and clipping. I'm
certain this is an XP issue rather than the software I am
using (Clean 4.0) as sound and speech menus in control
panel all help in some way but not entirely. If you have
any ideas at all I'd be really grateful. Thanks.
