Copying User Profiles

I'm attempting to copy a user profile in Windows XP Pro using the Microsoft
procedure found at the following site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

However, everytime I get to choosing a destination profile to copy to and
click "OK," the following error message pops up: "Failed to set Security on
the Destination Profile. Error - Access is denied."

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or how to work around this error message?

FYI - When choosing a destination profile, I'm browsing to the Documents and
Settings folder and then clicking (once) on the folder of the profile I want
to copy to.

You need to modify the "Permitted to Use" box, below the
destination segment. You can either assign a specific user or
a group such as Administrators.

You need to seize ownership of the target profile folder(s). Click
Start / Help, then search for "ownership" if unsure how it's done.

Uhhh . . . OK. I tried both McCarty's and Pegasus' suggestions. Still get
error message. I inherited this computer from another person and want to get
rid of his (Phil) user profile name and substitute my own (Jim). I found that
I have to do this by creating a new user profile and then copying Phil's
profile to my Jim's. So, I created profile Jim and also profile Temp because
I also found that I can not be logged into either Phil or Jim when copying
from Phil to Jim.

Now, I logged into Temp and performed the following Microsoft procedure for
seizing control of Jim as suggested by Pegasus:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421/en-us

This did not make the error message go away so I tried McCarty's suggestion
of modifying the "Permitted to Use" box but still I get the error message. I
find this "Permitted to Use" box intimidating. I'm not sure I put the proper
stuff in the box.

Still need help.

I don't think you need to copy Phil's user profile. Just use the newly
created Jim profile and apply your own custom settings. If you need
any content from Phil's profile just take ownership and copy what
you want to keep into your own profile.

If this is a home based machine, you can assign "Everyone" to the
permitted to use table.

Well, I selected "Everyone" and I still get the error message when copying
from Phil to Jim.

BTW, the reason I want to copy from Phil to Jim is that while in Jim, I
cannot see or use any of the installed software such as Microsoft Office
Programs. When created, Jim just had bare bones stuff.

Also, (I forgot to mention this earlier), and isn't this curious, I do not
seem to have a "default user" profile.

Several issues - Do you have Explorer set to show 100% of content.
This requires you change 3 options in the Folder view category. The
Default and All Users will be masked out unless these options are set.

No "Default User" profile ? - That doesn't sound right at all. Is this
an OEM machine ? Sounds like you need some clean up to get things
put back the way they should be.

When Microsoft Office is installed, it is available for all users,
even though not all of them may have the relevant shortcuts.
What happens when you invoke MS Word directly through
Explorer? It is located here:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\winword.exe

The "Default User" folder is normally hidden, that's why you
cannot see it. Try creating
"c:\Documents and Settings\Default User" and you will see
what I mean.

The Default User folder is used when a new user logs on for
the very first time. It plays no role later on.
