Hi,

You can change the name, but not the user profile folder and certain other
details. You need to create a new user profile with the preferred name, then
copy the old one into it in order to achieve what you are looking for.

Note that one step not listed in the article is that after creating the
destination profile you must log into it once first to create the necessary
file structure before you do the copy procedure.

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP,
you can use Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).

Click Start... Run...Regedit...OK. Make a backup of your current registry.
Now search for Compaq_Owner. Everytime you find it, change it to David.
If tragedy occurs, restore your backup registry you just saved.

That won't work by itself, they'd have to also chage all drectory names
associated with Compaq_Owner to David. Much simpler to create a new user
with the desired name and then copy the Compaq_User profile to it.

This may help:

As may this:

Be aware you must login once as the new user prior to copying the
profile or there will be nothing to copy to.

This seemed like the most user friendly route for me to take and
everything worked out. Thanks a lot.
