Copying saved movies to a DVD - Can anyone recommend software?

I have taken several home movies using a Sony camcorder which records to
digital tapes. I have saved these to my PC using the Sony software.

I would like to burn these movies to DVDs in order to free up tapes and have
back ups (we don't want to lose the baby pics!). However, I've discovered
that Windows XP (despite being a "media version") won't make DVDs. I've
tried the Roxio software that came pre-loaded, but it doesn't make DVDs
readable by a DVD player.

Can anyone recommend easy-to-use software for copying (and ideally, editing)
movies onto DVDs?

Nero 6 Ultra is a highly recommended program.
