Copying large file to FAT32 partition

D

Dan Jenkins

Hi all, I hope someone can help with this. I have a 160 gig disk
split into a 30 gig ntfs partition and a 130gig fat32 partition. I
have a 6 gig, laptop backup file on the ntfs partition that i want to
move to the fat32 partition and it won't let me saying there is
insufficient space. There is 55 gig free on the fat32 partition and
20 gig free on the ntfs. I have just installed SP2 so i'm unsure if
this has a bearing. I've never tried this before installing sp2.
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Fat32 has a 4gig file size limit nothing you can do to change it. Except
convert to NTFS.

No YOU are wrong we are talking about the size of a single file, not the
size of the harddrive!

Repeat: FILE SIZE
If you want to copy an individual file larger than 4GB, use NTFS.

I'm sorry but both claims are just not true, the default limit if XP has
formatted the drive is 32MB. However if you have formatted the drive with
a
3rd party format utility then there is theroetically a limit of 8
terabytes.
See
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp
for clarification.

How are you trying to copy the files to the Fat32 drive? My computer, Dos,
windows explorer etc..

Greg.

The default Windows XP maximum partition size for FAT32 is less than 32 Gb
not 32 Mb.

The OP is referring to file size not partition size. The maximum file size
for FAT32 file system is less than 4 Gb although on some older computers
the size limit is less than 2 Gb.
