Copying files to CD

Larry H.

Hi,
I am copying data files (pictures, documents, etc) to a
CD on Win XP Home and each time I select a particular
folder to copy, the copy starts and somewhere in the
process I get a message that "thumbs.db" has an encrypted
data source and some data might be lost. I always click
YES to continue and after copying, it seems that all of
my files are there.

Does anyone know what this is and how I can get rid of
it? It shows up on each and every folder that I try to
copy.

Thanks,
Larry

I believe those are files that record the data to display the thumbnail size
pictures you can see in Explorer when you open a folder containing pictures.

The thumbs.db file is a hidden file and is created when you set that folders
view to thumbnails. If you set xp to show hidden files the thumbs.db file
will show and can be deleted. If you set the view to thumbnails again it
will be recreated, so if you don't want it, then don't use thumbnail view or
set xp to show hidden files and when you choose your files to copy over to
cd, do not included the thumbs file.

If you view a folder of pictures in Thumbnail (or Filmstrip) view, this
file is created to cache the thumbnails. It has some extra data
recorded outside the regular directory entries on an NTFS file system,
which is why the warning - that won't get copied, but hardly matters.
Unless you copy *all* the files in the folder it would probably be best
to leave it out, to let a new one be built when needed
