Copying files from Win98 to WinXP

Guest

I bought a new Sony Vaio desktop a few weeks ago with Windows XP to replace
my old HP Pavillion running Windows 98. I backed up all my files from Win98
onto a CD-R disc, mostly Word docs and some email. When I put the disc into
the new computer, none of the files show up. Is there a way to save my old
files? I had Adaptec Easy CD creator on my old computer.

If you still have the files on the old computer and you can connect both to
the Internet, use AIM to send you files over to the new computer. With AIM,
you can send folders, not just files, which is why I recommend it over Yahoo
Messenger or some other messenger program.

Open AIM on both computers. Right click on the Screen Name of the computer
you are going to send to from the sending computer and choose Send File.
Choose Directory and browse to the folder you want to send and send it. On
the other side, make sure you browse to where you want to put the folder
after accepting the file transfer or it will put it in AIM's default folder.

If you are sending a lot, defrag the drive where you put all of it after
you're done.

My method is a lot less complicated and doesn't require an additional
install on the 98 machine or another cable.

By Chance, did you finalize your CD-R? Some CD Burning programs require BOTH
PC's to have the orig burn software installed unless you burn the CD a
specific way.

The Simplest explination is usually the correct one...

You probably used a packet-writing program (DirectCD) to write your
files to the CDR in Win98. XP has no native program to read this type
of CD. You'll have to install Roxio's newest packet-writing program
to access this CDR, and even then it may not see the files as it may
or may not be able to read files written in it's older cousin.

Packet writing important files, or using it to do any sort of backup
is dicey at best. NEVER use packet-writing to CDR(W)s to back up
mission-critical data.

Do you mean just from 98 to XP because I back up my stuff that way on my XP
Pro machine and I just took it over to another machine with XP Pro that I
just set up and it has no InCd on it or any third party burning software on
it at all. I used InCd to make the copies using Windows Explorer.

I even copied a folder to the other computer's hard drive and the files in
it copied and work perfectly.

what he means is when you backup your files, on your old computer,
with roxio make a data cd instead of using directcd, which comes with
roxio. also roxio is very buggy so i wouldn’t install it on your xp
machine. use nero instead. listen to me and nobodyman and don’t post
again till you’ve followed those directions and if it doesn’t
work---post again.

They could probably be read by the 'UDF Volume Reader' program, which
was available at www.nero.com, but which they seem to have hidden away.
