Copying data to an external HD

Hi - I am about to format my HD, but first I want to move the stuff I want
to keep to an external HD.
What should I do before copying the data, such as documents, pictures,
music? Do I need to change
some of the attributes (read-only, etc) so I can edit them afterwards?
