What have you used to backup the system?

i used the backup tool in xp which created the backup on my desktop which i
understood but i have to transfer that to an external media(cd/dvd) so i can
restore my system and then put the files back on my computer right?

it is my understanding that if i do a full system restore that my computer
will be restored to its original state and i would have to re-install
everything programs, files etc. so i backed up my files and folders but im
assumeing that i have to transfer that to an external media to restore the
files and folders back onto the computer. it wont be there once i do the
system restore will it?

Alcohol 120% might have a feature where you can back up the important
contents of your drive to multiple DVDs or CD. I think that Nero has
something like that.

Imaging is a separate type of backup. According to you, you've already
backed up what you wish to back up. Hence, what you apparently want to do
is to burn the backup file to CD. Since you have a burner, use whatever
you've been using to place files on CD and just use it to place the backup
file on CD. When you wish to restore, you'd reinstall XP, your
applications, copy the backup file back to your hard drive and use the
backup applications restore function to restore your files from that backup
file.

Be careful with the terminolgy here. If you have an OEM computer
that came with a "Restore" CD (rather than a regular installation
CD), and you use that CD, yes, it will restore it to factory
state.

But if you're talking about Windows "System Restore" feature,
that's something else entirely. It restores the *system* to a a
particular previous date you choose. It leaves data, programs,
etc. unchanged.

To transfer to a DVD (don't think of CD at that size) you would need to
ensure your backup is in multiple files, no bigger than will fit on -
NTBackup will in any case limit to the appropriate 4GB. You will then
need a third party burn program like Nero to burn to DVD.
