Copying audio from CD in WMP 9 series

When trying to copy audio files from a CD to my hard
drive using Windows Media Player 9 series, I get an error
message next to each track listing which says: "Windows
Media Player encountered an unknown error." I have
copied a few dozen tracks in the past (though not
recently), and I'm thinking that I may have been using an
earlier version of Media Player at that time and that
perhaps WMP 9 doesn't support copying from CD anymore.

Under WMP's Tools:Options:Copy Music, what format are you trying to copy the
music to your system as?

I was trying to copy using Windows Media Audio format.

I've now tried Windows Media Audio (variable bit rate),
which allows me to copy, but when I try to play the song,
nothing happens. Also, I noted the file size says only
3.07Kb, even though the copying process took about a
minute and seemed to be working OK.

I then tried Windows Media Audio Lossless, but got the
error message that says this is not supported.

Finally, I copied as MPEG Layer-3, which worked and was
playable afterwards, so I guess this solves my problem.
Forgive my ignorance, but is there any reason I would
want/need to save files in Windows Media Audio format
instead of MP3?

Thanks very much for your help, by the way. I did try
experimenting with some of the different settings, but
for some reason never changed the format option.

Does running:
regsvr32 wmadmoe.dll
fix you up?
