Copy Signatures etc

D

Dean

I am moving to a new computer and have successfully moved my pst file, but I
wonder how to copy all the other stuff such as signatures, etc, stuff that
doesn't seem to be in the pst, or if it was, didn't get enacted.

Help fast, please. In case it matters, I am going from Outlook 2003 to
2007.

Thx,
Dean

Your signatures are in %AppData%\Microsoft\Signatures. You can move them to
the same location on the new machine. Of course, if you old machine was
WIndows XP and your new machine is Vista, %AppData% will be a different
folder, but if you stick to using the %AppData% environment variable in
Windows Explorer, it will open the correct folder on each PC. For a list of
all of Outlook's major files and their locations, see this:

Thanks much, Brian. I was replacing my #1 computer, which caused my old #1
to become #2 and so forth, for all the users in the house and my head was
spinning, so I didn't notice this right away. It is really great to have.

If I may stray only slightly off topic, I am a power user of EXCEL (not
macros), and I am finding the EXCEL of Office 2007 (which Dell installed on
my new XP SP2 computer) to be too buggy for my tastes, not to mention that
most of my clients don't have it and so I have to save files in 2003 format
anyway. They say an update is due out in March but who knows if it would
fix my issues.

Unfrotunately, the gold level support guy at Dell tells me I have to
unInstall EXCEL 2007 before reinstalling 2003 or, eventually, I will
absolutely have problems - says he did at home for the very same reason
before he knew that and had to reformat his hard disk eventually. Then, he
also tells me I have to uninstall all of Office 2007, not just EXCEL 2007.
He suggests that my 2007 PST probably should donwngrade back to 2003 without
a problem. Do you, or anyone, here have an opinion about whether he is
right?

Also, is Outlook 2007 so much better or more relaible than Outlook 2003 that
I should consider staying with Offcie 2007 until the update? I was always
happy with Outlook 2003, not to mention EXCEL 2003 (actrually 2002, I think)
and WORD 2002.

Assuming I go forward with the downgrade, I know I want to backup my 2007
PST in case I destory it somehow, in the process of downgrading and/or
decide to go back to 2007. And, hopefully, if that doesn't work, I can find
my Outlook 2003 PST file from about a week ago. And, to capture the 200
emails within the last week, I guess i should send them to my AOL account or
something so, if I end up losing them in the downgrade, I can forward the
copies to mysefl, though that compromises the dates and senders. Or is
there a smarter way to backup this last week of 200 or so new e-mails?

Thanks!
Dean

You're welcome.

Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 use exactly the format file (although I
understand that OL 2007 does add some data not used by OL 2003) and they
should be interchangeable.

If you wish to use Excel 2003 but retain other elements of the Office 2007
suite, it should be possible. Were I to do it, I'd uninstall the entire
Office 2007 suite, install Excel 2003, then reinstall the remainder of
Office 2007.

Always a good idea. In fact, making regular backups of your PST whether or
not you intend to upgrade/downgrade is a good idea. See this:

I am led to beleive that, when I reinstall Offcie 2007, it's an all or
nothing proposition, though you suggest I can selectively install, say, just
Outlook, right?

Also, in your link, it talked about putting data files on a D drive. My d
drive on my laptop is a CD-R/DVD. I realize that the letter is probably
unimportant, but how do I find or split/create this "data files" drive, pray
tell?

Thanks, Brian.

Correct. You can install only as much of Office as you wish to use. Just
change the "Run from My Computer" icons to read "Not available".

If you don't have a data drive, you don't. That was just an example of a
safe place to keep a PST if you have more than one hard drive. You can burn
the PST to a CD, if you wish, or you can put it on a flash drive of just
keep it in another folder. The idea is to provide a second location for the
PST in the event something happens to the one actively being used. If you
have an MP3 player and it has adequate capacity, you can even store a copy
there, if you wish. As long as Windows can see the device as a disk drive,
you can store a PST on it.
