Copy from Word Document to E-mail Document

I am trying to copy a letter I have written in Word to and e-mail I am
sending to a friend. When I copy the letter and then paste into the e-mail
all that shows up is a small square, green W and red on the top.

What am I doing wrong?

Exactly what steps are you following, and in what version of Office?
