How can I changed the default so I can copy and paste more than 9000 items at
a time?

I didn't know there was an option. I've copied and pasted over 1000,000
mp3's (700+ GB) at a time, even over my LAN. It took about 24 hours, but no
problems encountered.

What kind of problems/error messages are you encountering? AFAIK there
is no limit to how many you can copy, but those can be famous last
words.
