cookie question

Why do I have cookies in two separate folders? Most of them look like
double entries. They are in:
C:/Documents and settings/user name/cookies and
C:/Documents and settings/user name/local setting/temporary internet files

Do I need two folders? Can one be deleted? Does the IE Delete Cookie
button refer to the one in the temporary internet files?
Thanks

The IE "Delete cookies" cleans up both folders. To be safe, leave both
folders.

Thank you. I will leave both alone.
Is there a way to "protect" cookies you want to keep from being deleted when
you hit the Delete Cookies IE button? Would a new folder in the cookie
folder protect them from being deleted but allow them to work at web sites
where you need them?

Never heard of this before; most people want cookies forever gone. If all
you want to do is have "instant access" to specific sites, in IE, open each
wanted site, then go to Favorites>Add to Favorites. You can later organize
them in folders.
