converting fat32 to ntfs

H. S.

Hi,

I am thinking of converting my XP partition (C: drive) from fat32 to
NTFS. Any suggestions before I use to the 'convert' command to do the
conversion? I have my data backed up.

Also, how long will the conversion take? The partition is around 14.5GB
in size. And lastly, are any finer points to consider (block size,
sectors/cylinger and what not)?

thanks.

Converting is pretty basis and usually works without a problem. I have a
habit of disconnecting from the network and making sure that the machine's
hard drive is clean and inorder, unnessasry programs are not running are
the others are running properly and that there are no problems before I do
any sought of modification to the computer.
It depends on your machine specs however it should not take long.

Just do the convert command & let it go. It should only take about 10
minutes or so. I've never had a problem with it ever & have never done
anything special to prepare for it.

No, unfortunately just doing the convert command is not a good thing to do.
ALthough it works, it will result in poor performance.. Read
http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm because there's an issue regarding
cluster size that isn't obvious.

You can safely convert your current hard drive to NTFS whenever
desired, without having to format the partition and reinstall
everything. As always when performing any serious changes, back up any
important data before proceeding, just in case. A little advance
preparation is also strongly recommended, so you can avoid any
performance hits caused by the default cluster size:

I,ve not had to perform a conversion for several years now, but I
wouldn't expect that small a partition to require more than 10 to 15
minutes, and quite possibly less.

And lastly, are any finer points to consider (block size,
sectors/cylinger and what not)?

As mentioned at the URL provided above.

AFTER I converted from FAT32 to NTFS I came across a thread from 12/15/05
wherein the following link was mentioned: http://www.aumha.org/a/ntfscvt.htm
..

Interestingly, on my mother-in-laws system, when I first ran it after the
convert, it seemed to run fine. It was after I defragged that I recall it
seemed to slow down. Maybe I just am comfusing date/times.... anyway, using
the recommende program from "Bootitng.com", can I change the sector
alignment and sector size AFTER already converting to NTFS>

Thanks,
