Convert to folder gets a "Server Error: Unable to process request."

AllBackJack

Apologies if this is a frequent item, but I couldn't find
a reference to it in doing searches.

When I go to convert a subweb back to folder, I get a pop-
up with "Server error: Unable to process request. Subwebs
have been created since you last access this Web. Refresh
your view and try again."

Well, subwebs haven't been created. This is at the bottom.
Refresh does nothing. I'm having this problem with a bunch
of folders/subwebs. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Jack

Try each of the following until the problem (hopefully)
goes away.

o Open the Subweb, choose Server from the Tools menu,
choose Permissions, click Change Permissions, and
make sure "Use same permissions as parent Web site"
is in effect.
o Recalculate hyperlinks on the subweb.
o Open the parent Web and run Recalculate Hyperlinks.
o Run Server Health (with Fix) on the entire virtual
server.

I don't know what this is. This all happens when I'm not
in publish mode. No site attached. I did a reinstall of
the FrontPage extensions on the server side, but this made
no difference.

Isn't there someway I can just go down a folder tree and
and say "hey, these aren't subwebs anymore"?

Are you trying to a convert subweb/site to a folder or are you trying to convert a folder to a
subweb?

If you are trying to convert a subweb/site back to a folder, you can not have any subwebs/sites
in/under the subweb

A subweb/site is identified by having a globe on the folder when you have the root web open or
folder under a subweb when open directly in FP.

Are you trying to a convert subweb/site to a folder or
are you trying to convert a folder to a
subweb? A subweb to folder.

If you are trying to convert a subweb/site back to a
folder, you can not have any subwebs/sites
in/under the subweb
There are no subwebs under. Nor any folders other then the
standard _* folders that FrontPage has put in.
A subweb/site is identified by having a globe on the
folder when you have the root web open or
folder under a subweb when open directly in FP.

In Windows Explorer there is no globe, in FP there is.

Now, I've used Subwebs many times. No problems. And gone
back and forth between subwebs and just folders. But for
some reason the world seems to have gotten out of sync.
And I don't know how to fix it.

Ok, forget Windows Explorer, as you should never modify any of your web content outside of FP.

With the web open in FP, double click to open the subweb, once the subweb is open, you should only
see two folders, _private and images, do you see these?

PS

In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files before you open the site in FP
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Also you may have some corrupt meta data thinking the subweb is already a folder (or one exists by that name)
If it is a local site browse to it in Windows Explorer and in NotePad open the file "services" in the _vti_pvt folder
- you should see a list of the folders FP "thinks" are webs (root) or subwebs

I have a feeling you're trying to make up for unfamiliarity with
FrontPage by monkeying directly at the file system level. This is
almost certainly doomed to failure. A FrontPage Web site simply has
too many interrelated elements. If you want to use FrontPage, use
FrontPage, and don't go around it.

Recalculate Hyperlinks is a command on the FrontPage Tools menu. It
performs a number of "repair" functions on broken Web sites (i.e.
sites someone has corrupted by monkeying around at the file system
level.)

Server Health is another process that repairs broken Web sites. To run
it, you:

1. Open the server's root Web site.
2. Choose Server from teh Tools menu, and then choose Administration
Home.
3. Under the Server Health heading, click Check Server Health.
4. Select all the check boxes and then click OK.
