Hi, Cassandra.

I suggest that your read up on MIDI. It's not a sound codec -- it's a
standard for controlling electronic sounds and electronic instruments.
Audio can't be converted into it.

There are a number of programs that'll convert MP3 to .wav, but I don't
see the point -- MP3 is a lossy compression scheme, so your wave file
will have the same distortion that's engineered into the original MP3.
You can take away, but once this is done, what's been thrown out can't
be replaced. MP3 can be recorded with varying degrees of compression and
distortion. Even though non-audiophiles can think that it's good, there
is some distortion present even in the best MP3 standard. It'll pass for
some types of music, but for live classical material on a fine stereo
system, MP3 just won't fly.

I say that !
I would convert mp3 to waw or midi because I like to make Stationery for
Outlouk Express, and I like to add my preferred music !
So, I look away to find a program to do this.
MP3 is a good audio file but it's too late and even if wav or midi have
poor quality, for me is ok !
Regards.

Just to confirm what Richard wrote (if you didn't quite believe him!)

It can't be done - you can waste your time if you like, and there's a
couple of progs that claim to do it, but they only work monotonically, if
at all.

With *your* name, you should be used to this sort of answer! ;-)

not tried it but a quick google came up with Amazing Midi...it won't be
perfect but may meet the original posters needs - not tried it yet, but will
give it a whirl when i have more time.
"AmazingMIDI automatically transcribes music, converting WAV files into MIDI
files. It can recognize single-instrument polyphonic music. It's a powerful
tool to help you to transcribe music, to practice musical instruments and to
make MIDI files, and so on.
AmazingMIDI creates an Output File (.mid) from an Input File (.wav) that
contains musical data, and a Tone File (.wav) that consists of monotone
data. AmazingMIDI analyzes the Input File, assuming that every sound in the
file is played with the same tone color as the one in the Tone File. As a
result, even if the music contains several different instruments,
AmazingMIDI writes down all detected notes as a single-instrument music.

The quality of music recognition depends on the tone color of the music.
AmazingMIDI is suitable for analyzing the precise-frequency attenuating
sounds like piano or guitar. The drum sound becomes only noise. "

You can find 1000`s of MIDI files on the web Cassy. Some are very good, and
the advantage is they are small in file size. Do a Google for MIDI files.
Like the other posters say, don`t degrade the music from mp3 to wav. I`ve
amassed 4,600 Midi files.

best wishes..OJ

I tried the sample, it wasn't *all* wrong, but I'd guess 30% is, enough
to make a nonsense of it - listen to the final cadence of the demo.

You missed a number of bits from the site:-

"AmazingMIDI is suitable for analyzing the precise-frequency attenuating

Well, that'll please the drummers, they can stay in the pub.

"Currently, automatic music transcription has no substantial solution in
general,"

"Q: Can AmazingMIDI convert EXACTLY a WAV file into a MIDI file in such a
way that the MIDI file sounds like the original WAV file?

"A: Unfortunately, the answer is NO."

"A: AmazingMIDI provides poor results on unstable pitch sounds like
vocals."

I would LOVE to get hold of a wav to midi convertor, it would assist me
enormously as I'm not a good enough musician tp produce original tracks
for manipulation.

I won't hold my breath.... <sigh>
