I was trying to do this with Audacity some time ago, but found I was
getting absolutely nowhere with the Import Midi function. A quick peek
at the help files told me that the functionality wasn't in place!

However, as Audacity is a essentially a recording device, I wondered
whether I could play a midi file with the standard OS media player and
record it in Audacity.
It's simplicity itself. All you need to is ensure that the Record
Source in Audacity is set to Midi. Start recording, then press play on
the media player.
Once done, trim up the waste space and simply save the project as Wav
or Mp3 ( using plugin ) as required.

I'm pretty sure that there are dedicated midi to wav converters out
there - this method just gives you another option, and it allows you
to apply various filters to the file..such as pitch shift, tempo
change and EQ etc...

I was always under the impression that midi files are just instructions
and don't actually contain any audio at all...

That's right, they're just fired straight at the sound processor. (
It's also why you can open them up in notation programs, such as
Sibelius ).
I'd imagine a convertor would have to direct the midi file via the
sound processor in much the same way I did.

DEad right, this question comes up regularly; there is no such thing as a
wav type prog back into midi.

A couple claim it, but they are one instrument monophonic, and not much
good at that, and absolutely no use with real music.

Sorry about my previous answer farther down the thread; we seem to have
reversed your question.

Timidity++ is an ecxellent tool for this - I'm not sure if it will do mp3,
but it will convert midi to wav using soundfonts, giving excellent quality.

You will need to d/l a soundfont as well as timidity.

Trouble is, the links page from tim Brechbill's site isn't working so I
can't find the support sites.

P'raps someone else will find them first; in the meantime, try to find
version 2.13 (tim32g.exe or thereabouts); older versions are a previous
generation.

It's all a bit quirky, linux, open source, anoraks, servers shifting, new
developers, but an excellent prog and there *is* help.....somewhere

Freeware Fanatic

Reading all this good stuff here, I wonder if anyone can recommend a USENET
group to learn about (1) recording MIDIs and (2) making home-made WAVs and
MP3s smaller but of high quality (I get 90 meg songs where the average rip
is 1 or 2 megs).

TIA

Timidity should do it.

Not sure if this will help, but Trackers (music creation) might be of
some use. You should be able to open MIDI music in one and save it to
what ever the Tracker allows you to. Even better you should be able to
mess with the instruments, levels, timing etc... It will involve some
learning, but if your into that type of thing then all the better.
