convert file type

Before I bought a new computer, I saved all data I wanted to keep. The new
computer has MS XP. I copied my old files to the new computer. I am trying
to open both the Adobe 'text' files and Adobe picture files and it's telling
me its the wrong file type. The error message generated is
"Adobe Reader could not open '*.PDD' because it is either not a supported
file type or because the file has been corrupted". The file was originally
created by scanning in and I was able to bring up with Adobe Reader and print
the 'text'.

Pictures loaded in my new computer from my digital camera are jpg. Is that
what my old scanned pictures and 'text' need to be? If I remember correctly,
some of the pictures were input on the old computer from a cd generated when
I developed my pictures (I didn't have a digital before).

What do I have to do to be able to open my old pictures? Can I convert the
files? Convert to what?

I am unable to install Adobe Photoshop on my new computer. Is there any other
solution.
