fragmented into .chk files. any idea how to

It depends. The most effective way is to retrieve them from
your backup medium. If you have lots of money then you
can ask a data retrieval bureau to re-assemble the files for
you.

You might want to use this unfortunate experience as
an opportunity to review your backup strategy.
