before i start installing all my software, is there a way to control which
programs get setup on start? (ie, how do i stop all but the essential stuff from
loading?)

thanks

Well if they are good well written programs/Applications then they will give
you the option to Let it run on start up, install on Quick launch, start menu
and create an Icon on the Desktop, so you will have to check or uncheck the
boxes for the option you want or you don't want to have this Application to
do or not to do?.
If they want to screw up then they will not offer you these options and
leave you in the dark, so you can Remove them from the Start Up option
manually later after installing them from this Path:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\StartUp
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\StartUp

HTH.

First thing I do when I get a new system is make sure I have the factory
rebuild disks (just in case). Then go to the Add/remove Programs and
uninstall everything I won't ever use.

Then I take care of the auto start crap.

For diagnostics, msconfig can help you work through what to load and not
load on startup. But I prefer AUTORUNS from Sysinternals (now Microsoft).

Good luck,
