Control Problem - Can't exit design Mode because Control cannot be created.

I have created a form with controls using Word 2000. After deleting some existing controls and modifying properties like the control caption, I save the file. When I reopen it , I get a message stating that "Can't exit design mode because control cannot be created" The help implies that the control cannot be instantiated because of missing files related to the control. I have also noticed that the reopened form has renamed all of my controls with the previous name plus 1. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can recover from it?
