Control Panel

In OE, to open an attachment, I get a message that I must create a File
Association. In Control Panel, I do not see an icon for Folder Options.
Where can I find this?

Thanks

Look again. If it has the default icon, it's a folder with a wrench and
hammer. It's right after "Display" on mine.

If you have Control Panel configured in the default Category
view, click on Appearance and Themes. Folder Options should be
available at the bottom of the Appearance and Themes page.

Keep in mind that if you are currently using the Category view
you can click on "Switch to Classic View" in the left hand pane
and you should see Folder Options displayed.

If you're still unable to locate Folder Options go to Start ->
Run and enter the following in the Open box.

control folders

Click OK.

Good luck

My path - Win XP Pro - Start, Control Panel...then a "Pic a Category" screen
with ten icons - two rows of five each with the first Appearance and Themes
and the last on in the second column is Security Center. What am I missing
here?

Thanks

There are several ways to skin this cat.

Open up Explorer and go to Tools - Folder options.

Same thing.

You can figure out the Control Panel issue at your leisure.

Also, you need to know what will open the file you have or you
won't know what to associate it with.

If you're not sure, what is the file extension of the file you have?

If you know the program you need to open the file and you have this
program, try to hold down the Shift and right click on the file.

Choose 'Open With' and you can search for the correct application.

You will see a little check box 'Always use this program to open this
type of file' If you check the box, the file should open with that
program the nect time you double click the file.

Do you have PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer installed in order to associate
the files?

If you don't have Microsoft Office installed on your computer
you'll need to download to download and install PowerPoint
Viewer to view that type of file.

PowerPoint Viewer 2007

PowerPoint Viewer 2003

Good luck

To open any file, whether you get it as an attachment or any other
way, you need to have the appropriate program installed. Computers
don't come with every possible program installed, and none of can open
every possible file we receive unless we are willing to install the
appropriate software to do so.

A .pps file is a PowerPoint presentation. To open a PowerPoint
presentation, you need to have PowerPoint (or some compatible program)
installed. Since .pps is not listed in folder options, it would appear
that you do not have such a program installed.

You can buy PowerPoint, either by itself or as part of Microsoft
Office. Alternatively you can use the less expensive WordPerfect
Office, or the freeware OpenOffice. The best alternative for you might
be to download the free Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...40-14E1-467D-8DCA-19D2A8FD7485&displaylang=en
or http://tinyurl.com/u5bsa
The PowerPoint Viewer will let you view the file you were sent, but
not modify it, or create new PowerPoint presentations of your own.

I should also caution you that opening attachments like this is very
risky. They can contain macro viruses. You often see advice not to
open attachments from people you don't know. I think that that's one
of the most dangerous pieces of advice you see around, because it
implies that it's safe to do the opposite--open attachments from
friends and relatives. But many viruses spread by sending themselves
to everyone in the infected party's address book, so attachments
received from friends are perhaps the *most* risky to open.

Even if the attachment legitimately comes from a friend, it can
contain a virus. I'm not suggesting that a friend is likely to send
you a virus on purpose, but if the friend is infected without
realizing it, any attachment he sends you is likely to also be
infected.

Thanks to you and the many others who have responded to my inquiry. I do not
have Power Point installed on my computer, and I did not know that the .pps
file extension was a Power Point thing. This is the firs time for me with a
..pps extension and I will not bother to download the free or trial program
you listed.

I continue to be impressed with the quality of the assistance that I can
obtain via
the Newsgroups, and also with the speed of the responses.

Today, I learned how to get into the Folder Options screen in Control Panel
should I need this in the future.
