Control Panel

I have an old tower computer (using Windows 2000 Professional) and a new XP
notebook. Both are tied together with a wireless router.
I do not have the monitor and keyboard attached to the tower any longer. I
just use the tower to serve as additional storage and a link to an old laser
printer. (The new notebook does not print to the old printer even when
directly wired via a parallel>USB wire) However, I can print to the old
printer when it is conneected to the old tower.

Here is my problem. I would like to be able to get to the Control Panel on
the old Tower. (via the networked notebook). When I go to
Tower>WINNT>System32>control.exe it opens the control panel of the notebook.

Another problem is that when I look at the desktop of the tower it does not
show me the recycle bin. I would like to empty it on occassion as well.

I am hoping there is some workaround so I do not have to reattach the
monitor and keyboard to the tower each time I wish to do some housekeeping.

You guidance is appreciated

Either buy yourself a KVM or set up some type of remote desktop control.
You can't use XP's RDC if your notebook is running Home Edition, but
you can use one of the free VNC flavors or even a commercial product
like pcAnywhere.

Malke-Thanks for the prompt reply.
I need some help with the initials. What is KVM? What is VNC? I am using
XP Media Center. RDC=Remote Desktop Control, right? I guess, what you are
saying is I must purchase some additional software or reattach the
monitor/keyboard to do the housekeeping.

I have used pcAnywhere back in the early 90's, but at the place I recently
worked, the IT guy told me it was not particularly secure. So I will probably
shy away from that. Other than pcAnywhere, are their other software that will
serve as a KVM or VNC?

Thanks

You didn't need to post twice. Be patient. All of us regular helpers are
volunteers with Real Lives(tm). If you were in a hurry, you could have
Googled both KVM and VNC and gotten answers.

A KVM (Keyboard-Video-Monitor) is a device that allows you to use one
keyboard, one mouse, and one monitor with multiple computers. This
works fine if the machines are in the same room in fairly close
proximity to each other.

VNC is free remote control software. RealVNC and UltimateVNC are two
varieties. pcAnywhere is fine if you set up proper security since you
need to open ports in your firewall. You would need to do this for any
remote control software but since you are only doing this within your
own local area network, this doesn't really apply to your situation.

XP Media Center is a superset of XP Pro, so you have the ability to use
Remote Desktop Control. I don't know whether Win2k has any remote
desktop built into it so the third-party solutions may be necessary.

Malke, I did not intentionally post twice. After I composed my message and
pressed the "Post" button I was notified the message was not sent and
Microsoft was getting an error report. I copied and pasted the message and
tried again. It went through the second time.

Believe me, I am entirely grateful to all the "regular helpers" and have the
utmost respect for their time and help.

Thank you for the definitions for the initials.

Sorry for being cross about it. I should have looked to see how you were
posting first before complaining. The web interface is just awful and
lately it seems even more awful with lots of people doing multiple
posts for just the same reason as you. You will get a lot more out of
this resource (Usenet) if you set up a real newsreader, which is very
easy to do. Here is my usual cut/paste about that:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Outlook Express since you already have it. Here are
some links to information about newsgroups:

Malke, son-of-a-gun, I found the right MS newsgroup.
Thanks for the tip and the understanding how I can better use the
information. If going through my news reader will eliminate the problem of
the web interface, I'm all for it.

Thanks for the guidance and the patience.

Now it is time for me to learn this stuff!
