Control Panel will not open

When I try to open my Control Panel from
Start>Control Panel
my screen blinks and the whole toolbar dissappears for a
few seconds, then reappears but no Control Panel window.
When I try
Start>My Computer>Control Panel
I get the active desktop recovery screen an the "windows
encountered an unexpected error" ................. screen.
Still no Control Panel
Can anyone help please?

st's check disc on xp

my compuer...right click the
drive,>proerties>tools...that's it

BUT

xp remaps bad sectors on the fly as it encounters
them...while check disc at times MIGHT solve an issue, for
the most part, it's just a waste of time
