Under Programs and Features - when I uninstall software, the name stays in
the list. How do I delete the name? The software is definitely gone though.

This usually happens with older software installs or other 'bad' installers
that may not be 100% aware of the Vista Registry.
You could manually edit the entry out of the registry list for installed
programs (if you are comfortable navigating the registry), or simply
download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
which will remove any entry that you tell it to (all caution advised to be
sure you highlight the correct (leftover) item).

PS. the actual download is about 1/3 down the page on the left--just above
the huge grey Readme.txt.

Thanks - will do that.

FYI - It was Norton's Internet Security 2007 that I uninstalled. Came with
the computer.

Try removing it again. Sometimes you will get the chance to remove from the
list. Norton's is notorious for multiple programs in the Add-remove list. Go
thru the whole list to see if Live Update or another Norton program is there
and remove that.

Did you use the Norton uninstall tool from the Symantec website? If not,
you might want to check it as it might be able to clean up the rest of
whatever was left behind.

Norton also has a "remover" program on their website which you can download,
and will supposedly fully remove Symantec products, as there have been allot
of uninstall problems.

Max,

Can you tell us the location in the registry? Not all installed programs
appear in the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, for example, the WMP
plug-in for Firefox is listed but Firefox isn't. Thanks.

Drew

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Some remnants may also be found here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products

Or do a registry search for the specific application.
