control panel freezes

when I enter the control panel, it hangs. I cannot enter
any sub menus. When I try to exit the control panel, I
get -the program is not responding.

Any ideas?

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?
