Control Panel error

Am running XP Home SP-2 with all current updates. Not sure when this first
started, but recently noticed that in Category View clicking on some icons
returns "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We
are sorry for the inconvenience." Closing that pane locks up XP necessitating
end the task with Task Manager via Ctl Alt Del. Have not tested every icon,
but one it happens consistently on is Printers and Other Hardware. Classic
mode seems normal. Is there a way to restore/repair the Control Panel short
of reloading Windows and applying all the myriad of updates? I have searched
the KB and Net without coming up with anything.

See if this helps.

To determine if this is caused by a browser extension (also loads with
explorer.exe processes), disable the tool bands and Browser Helper Objects:

1. Click Start, Run, type Control Inetcpl.cpl.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Under Browsing, click to clear the Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restart) check box.

Open Control Panel, or folder window and observe the behavior. If the
problem persist, undo the above setting. Try ShellExView to determine if a
shell extension is causing the problem.

Using ShellExView, disable all the third-party extensions (non-Microsoft),
and restart.

Wesley, thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, neither approach uncovered
the source of the error. It remains.

Is there any way of restoring/repairing the entire Control Panel function
short of reloading Windows and all of the subsequent updates?

You receive an "Error occurred while Windows was working with the
Control Panel file" error message when you open Control Panel in

Restore the Control Panel, line 256; left -
