Cannot open folders or control panel

I have just re-loaded XP Prof SP2 and run all automatic updates
including IE7.

Now if I double click on a folder or on Control Panel or Windows
Explorer they half open so I can see the frames of the folder, then
lock.

I have to open task manager (Ctrl + Alt +Del) and close them through
that. When I do that all the desktop icons disappear for a second then
come back.

How can I sort this problem?

Any help appreciated

When did this problem start? Right after the "reload" or after some of the
updates, or after IE7 or? How exactly did you "reload" XP? Do you mean a
clean install? Why did you have to do this in the first place? Where there
problems? Did you install all the drivers including for the chipset and
video device?

If you give more details on the history of this problem maybe someone can
provide more focused help.

Thanks for the reply

To sum up - I fitted a new mainboard and processor to upgrade the
working XP Pro system - it had Socket A XP2000 CPU and struggled to
play my boy's games. Now on a Winfast board with Athlon 3000 64 CPU.

Of course it wouldn't boot so ran the XP install and chose R (the
repair) option.

It all went fine, system booted, did all automatic updates except IE7,
my boy's games play much better etc etc except I cannot open Windows
Explorer or any folder. When I try the outline of the folder appears,
then disappears and the screen does a refresh with all the icons
disappearing for a second.

Sometimes the outline frame of the folder appears and the desktop
locks so I have to open the task manager and close the folder (which
is reported in TM as not responding).

I have installed the graphics drivers from Nvidia but haven't
installed the chipset drivers separately as the XP installation never
asked for them.

I consider myself quite adept at sorting PC problems but this has me
stumped.......

Regards

Mary
