Control a remote PC without it needing to login?

Is there any software (commercial or free) out there that would allow
me to remotely control a remote Windows XP PC without it having a user
logged in or with multiple users logged in? So far the programs I've
seen (Radmin, tightvnc, dameware, pc anywhere etc.) seem to require
that one user be logged in and a service running in the background on
the remote PC.

I'm guessing maybe this isn't possible because Microsoft haven't
allowed it due to the security implications - can anyone confirm (or
hopefully deny) this...???

I am running VNC on a server box w/o KBD and that's how I get to it
for administration.

Do u mean you are not even able to install a service on the host? Then
maybe u aren't meant to have access to that PC.

Running as a service means precisely that: running without a user logged in.
Any one of those programs will allow you to connect to a remote PC. Once
connected, if you know the username and password, you can log in. Only
Windows Terminal Services (or Citrix) allow you to log in to a seperate
session
while another user is logged in.

If you are using Windows XP Pro, it has its own built in Remote Control
Software.

(In order to set up the remote control software and log in you need
admin privledges) You don't have to be logged in to use it, either.
I'm not sure if multiple people can be logged on at one time though.

If you do have XP Pro, right click on My Computer, click Properties,
click Remote, then put a check mark next to "Allow users to connect
remotely to this computer". Then on the machine that you want to use
to control the remote computer, install the client software (if the
computer you are using is XP, the software is already installed)

After you install it, go to Start -> Programs (9x) or All Programs
(2000/XP) -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop
Connection. In the box that says "Computer" put in the IP Address of
the computer you want to control, then hit "connect". If everything is
set up correctly, you should get a login dialog where you would put in
your username and password. To disconnect, go to start, disconnect.

question slightly as I'm not sure that any of these quite answers it.
What I meant is, do any of these programs allow my girlfriend to be
downstairs using the laptop on her user account while I'm upstairs on
my desktop PC and I can remotely log into my account account on the
laptop? Strange question I know but there is a reason why (won't bore
you with the details!)

Those programs should do what you want, unless you want to spy on
your girl friend and such. Boring details, details details...
