Continuous Rebooting after applying RIS Image

I have created a Windows XP image using riprep.exe. When I apply that image
to a new PC I get to the 'enter serial number' screen (yes, I know how to
bypass this....I just haven't tweaked the answer file yet), and after I enter
the serial number the PC reboots, gets back to the serial number screen, I
enter the serial number, the PC reboots and on it goes.

I have tried putting the serial number into the answer file. When I do, then
the PC just keeps rebooting anyway.

I have other WinXP images on the same RIS server and I can apply them OK.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this image might not be working?

Might be a shot in the dark - but I had this problem and it turned out that the HAL I was using was incorrect when I tried to apply the image to different hardware.

make sure that you are using ACPI
Also if you are using SATA drives I had to put a section in that rebuilds the mass storage controller

Add the following line to your INF file

BuildMassStorageSection=Yes

This should hopefully solve your problem

For anyone's information, the problem was solved by removing McAfee VirusScan
8.0i from the master machine.

Actually, this latest version of VirusScan is responsible for breaking a bit
of our infrastructure lately........WSUS will NOT work with Virusscan 8
installed - it seems WSUS runs in the svchost process, which of course
VirusScan blocks. There ain't much point excepting svchost from VirusScan's
scanning for the obvious reasons. McAfee's response so far has been 'bad
luck'. Could be 'bad luck' for them when we change to a different supplier!
