as Contacts (75); Can anyone tell me what the number
represents in parentheses behind Contacts.

It's either the total number of contact items in the folder or the number
of them that are marked as "Unread". If you right-click on the folder
and choose Properties you'll get access to radio buttons that let you decide
which you want to show.
If you don't want any number to show set it to display Unread ones, then
go to that folder, do a CTRL+A to select all and then CTRL+Q to mark them
all as read.
