Contacts have disappeared (sort of)

Len B

A friend rang me with a problem concerning Excel 2003 and I had him execute
"Detect and Repair" which fixed his Excel problem but created other problems
in Outlook 2003.

It deleted all his Email accounts which he has put back. When he selects the
Contacts button (bottom left region) the names are all there and he can
right click to initiate a new message. However, when he initiates a new
message from Mail or opens the address book Ctrl+Shift+B, no names appear.
The "Show Names from the" field defaulted to Contacts but no names appear.
Selecting "Outlook Address Book", the only other alternative, showed no
names either.

What has happened and how should it be fixed? Why would fixing Excel make a
mess of Outlook?

TIA

Probably just created a new Outlook profile which you must now configure.
Did you enable the Contacts Folder as an email address book in its
properties?

Thanks Russ
Went to properties for Contacts, ticked the box to show it as an address
book. - No change.
I took him to Tools|Email accounts, View or change address books. He had a
poke around and ended up having 2 contacts folders now. I had him make a
copy the PST and then delete one of the 2 Contacts. He chose the empty one
first go and now he's ok. Thanks.

Still do not understand why/how fixing an Excel (clipboard) problem would
play up with OL.

Just depends on what else might have been wrong with the Outlook
installation files. If Detect and Repair found evidence for conflicting
profile settings, it might have created a new one.

Thanks for that Russ
I guess it could have been anything really. One of those unsolveables. Next
time I talk to him I'll ask how many profiles he has now. Before this he had
only one.

He may only have had one, but if he'd ever done an upgrade installation,
that profile often retains conflicting connections to the old installation.
There are several scenarios in which Detect and Repair might create a new
Outlook profile, but to my knowledge they are not well documented.

As of today he has only one profile. Its called Outlook. I had to talk him
through finding that info so it is unlikely that he deleted any profiles.

The computer is a brand new notebook. I did the OS installation and Office
installation about a week or so before Christmas. Then along comes his Excel
problem which triggered this whole issue.

I think you are right - that the Detect & Repair must have overwritten his
existing profile (with a fresh new one with the same name). Why will forever
be a mystery, I guess.
