Contact file not visible when importing or exporting contacts

I'm tidying up all my contacts files for email and also for my mobile ph
using outlook. Have done this many times without any problems and am familiar
with import export process.
I exported all the contacts to an excel file to work on as it's much easier
than through outlook. Had a hiccup at first as when I got to the select a
contact file to export there was just a blank space. I exited outlook and
went back in and it was all OK.
Now I've finished the excel spreadhsheet and want to reimport it but it's
the same problem in reverse. I can't "see" a contact file to import to. I've
exited and re opened Outlook two or three times but still no joy.

No matter what "you're familiar with," you should never use import/export to
transfer Outlook data, especially through a non-Outlook file type.
Perhaps you should start by telling us what you want to do so we can tell
you the proper way to do it. You are not using one.

You may want to start with running the relevant diagnostics for the version
of Outlook you have as a starting point (either Detect 'n Repair or Office
Diagnostics as the case may be) to see if the "hiccups" go away.

If problems continue, do include Outlook version and anything else that
happened that you can think of that led up to the Outlook Address
Book starting to mis-behave in any follow-on post.

Alternatively, create a new profile and see if there is still a problem.
