My only "argument" is that Microsoft should make products that don't
need to be patched twice a week. And with all your childish insults,
you've failed to answer that very simple question.

Wow twice a week? Bit of an exageration there perhaps????

I must have missed a LOT of updates then...

Don Burnette

Really. Hackers are going to find ways to exploit weaknesses in any OS they
focus on. When they do, and it becomes known, MS is quick to put an update
out for it on windows update.
Same priciple as to how anti-virus software works, someone creates a virus,
it becomes known, the AV companies create a fix, and update their definition
files. If the USER does not keep their OS and AV files up to date, then who
is to blame??? God gave us enough sense to get out of the rain.
Anyone, who thinks an OS should be perfect, invulnerable, and never need
updating, has no business owning a computer to start with. Best to sell it
off or donate it to a charitable group.

If you have to ask if your copy of XP is 32 or 64 bit, it's 32.

More info from MS:

(Stolen with pride from Gary Thorn... thanks!)

This is likely a case of the patch leading to a worm. It has happened before, someone discovers the vulnerability, Microsoft creates a patch for it, information about it is published, giving the devious minded virus writer the details of how to use the hole for an attack. Since many users don't keep up to date with security patches the worm/virus is going to be successful. It's not at all uncommon to see computers newly infected from a virus that has had a security patch released a year or more ago. Those who say MS should have known about the vulnerability and done something sooner, or prevented it in the first place, have no concept of the complication of millions of lines of code and the ways it can be twisted in ways never anticipated.

I agree with another poster, you seriously need to get a life

Thanks for your concern, but my life is really none of your business,
and is totally off-topic!
- if
you hate XP so much, why are you so fascinated with it that you spend
so much time in these forums?

I have two main reasons:

1.) To provide my fellow consumers a contrary opinion to that of MS, in
order that they can make more informed judgements on their own.

2.) Because it's my job to support MS flawed software at work, so where
better to hear about them all!

And who said I hated XP, just think MS has way over-valued it, with
monopoly-protected pricing, and licensing FUD!
You just like to read your own
typewritten words of babble?

Actually I rather despise reading my own words, because I can't ever
read them without wanting to edit or add something.
Get off on it?

Well, I'd have to admit that I have gotten hard while reading my own
words on a very few occasions, but I've never been exited to the point
of orgasm.
Good grief, I keep my system secure and up to date with critical
updates - guess what, no worm!! Whoo, imagine that. NO, I did not fix
it - dang, what about that????

Goody for you! I guess that makes you either a Windows Update junkie,
or are risking to be Automatically Updated with a bad patch, like
811493!
You know, at times you can make some decent arguments, but posts like
this show your true nature.
I think you need a Lobotomy.

At least then we would be arguing at the same intelligence level!

Yet you keep responding to me. If I and my opinions were truely

An exaggeration? Actually it was an understatement. You must indeed
have missed these updates, which are for WinXP alone, from JULY alone:

Buffer Overrun In HTML Converter Could Allow Code Execution (823559)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-023.asp

Buffer Overrun in Windows Could Lead to Data Corruption (817606)

Buffer Overrun In RPC Interface Could Allow Code Execution (823980)

Unchecked Buffer in Windows Shell Could Enable System Compromise
(821557)

Unchecked Buffer in DirectX Could Enable System Compromise (819696)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-030.asp

And here is a page to enlighten you further. Tell me, when you view
this page of security updates, does it scream "quality software" to you?

What is it, psychologically, that goes on to make people like you feel
the need to make an announcement whenever they (supposedly) add someone
to their block list? Is it "I can't compete, I give up! I admit it!"?

Imagine that...someone points out flaws, and you use an argument about their
character, instead of using some form of intelligence and arguing the actual
subject.
No one needs a lobotomy, but you might actually go back to the hospital
yourself and ask if they can reverse the one you've already had.

You've got him pegged pretty good EG, as I suspect more and more have as

I've always hated cockroaches...

Hmm...the only ones I see here whining, are you and EG. Instead of trying to
logically argue your points and apologies for M$' screwups, you both complain
about persons who point out the flaws.
It also looks more like *you're* the one who "gets off" on seeing his own
words...they make you seem so brazen and bold! Wow.
Don't "suspect"...it takes a lot more brain power than you've shown to
actually have.
If you hate cockroaches so much, clean your damn house and quit living in a
sty, or tell your friends to quit leaving their egg sacs there after they
visit.

OK, Mike, I'm going to spell this out V E R Y S L O W L Y for you.

Yes, the flaw existed.

Microsoft created a patch for it. You know, software that fixes it?

Microsoft put it in an easy to find location: "Windows Update."

Windows Update is easy to find. Click on "Start" and look at the menu. Gasp!
One Click to launch it!

If THAT's too much work, by default, Windows Update also DOWNLOADS the
updates automatically and tells you they're ready to install.

THIS UPDATE has been out for nearly a month. Plenty of time for it to be
downloaded.

All the user needs to do is tell it to install.

A DOUBLE-CLICK.

Has Microsoft done EVERYTHING POSSIBLE short of SENDING PEOPLE OUT TO YOUR
HOME or Business and DOUBLE CLICKING THE F'ING ICON FOR YOU to get this
installed and close this security hole?

Hint: The answer's not "No." And no "What if I were in a coma for a year and
JUST woke up today" stories.
What about the people who bought a computer in the last couple of days?
They can not even get into the website to get the updates to fix the
problem because they are infected and booted off before they get that
far. The problem is Microsoft's for not fixing a bug that is Many years
old. If the person has had the machine for awhile and not updated the
program they are partly at fault. But there are those who will not use
Windows Update becuase it may trash their computer.

You are equating a critical OS security flaw to the need for AV
updates? The difference is that when an AV vendor issues an update,
it is to protect its customers from things other people are doing.
When Microsoft issues a critical security update, it is protecting its
customers from what it should have been doing.

Or, in the words of Microsoft spokesman Sean Sundwall,

"Ultimately, it's a flaw in our software," he said.
