Constant Crashes

I have been using moviemaker XP for a couple years and now have a problem
with not being able to save new projects.

I can open some old projects and they work, but others - which I have
created recently - won't load, And anytime I try to create a new project it
crashes. I can save a new project, close moviemaker, and when I reopen it and
try to load the new project - it crashes.

I get the "MM has encountered a problem and needs to close" error msg. And
the "Do you want to send a report of this problem to help improve mm etc. "

When I click to see what data that report contains I see this line that it
is going to send a file named 3110_appcompat.txt file along with a lot of
system information.

Also another message that says:
Error signature
Appname: moviemk.exe AppVer 2.1 4026.0 ModName: arctsspl.ax
ModVer. 2.4.2.20 Offset: 000047b2

I really like moviemaker and it is really frustrating that all of a sudden
it stops working for me. Anyone have any suggestiosn to try?

Thanks to all .

arctsspl.ax isn't on my list of codecs that Movie Maker has problems with,
but if you take it out of the picture by using the compatibility list of
MM2.1 or renaming the codec... I'll add it to my website's Problem Solving >
Crashes and Hangs page.

How would I do what you suggest ? I am an Access programmer and have worked
with pc's for 30 years so I'm sure I can follow directions.

Following your website instructions to read my system log I can see that file
has caused numerous moviemaker crashes recently.

How would I take that out of the picture as you say - just rename it. I do a
lot of dvd creating and burning on my cpu - Roxio - and I'm sure that uses a
lot of codecs - maybe the prolbme one I'm having.

renaming is one way.... I use arctsspl.ax_ and take the underscore back off
to return it to service....

no rebooting needed

Well add that to your list of problem codes, because as soon as I found and
renamed that file to the .ax_ extension and started moviemaker, it seemed to
solve the problem and I could load my recent projects.

Filename: ArcTSSpl.ax
It is from a company named Arcsoft, Inc.
File version 2.4.2.20
Description: mpgsplitter filter ArcSoft MPEG Codec

Thanks much for your help
