My system is regularly crashing and re-booting itself ithout any warning or
obvious cause. I am having to save data more regularly than normal to
minimise potential loss. Any thoughts. I have an AVG Professional firewall
installed as well as adware etc. Is there anything I can 'tweak' or is it a
hardware problem?

Do you have any crash or Exception codes ? Abrupt rebooting may be
due to how Windows is configured. It has a option to Automatically
restart on System Failure. You can uncheck this option so the next time
the system faults you can see any diagnostic information. Change this
via System Properties, Advanced, Startup & Recovery [Settings].
It's possible the system is unstable due to internal temps in the PC. You
can add a program SpeedFan that will display most sensors.

Just to add. I have seen this on a lot of my clients systems which was caused by the Power Supply overheating from dirt or on it's way out
