consolidate free space on defrag

I have XP w/SP2. I notice the disk defragger doesn't consolidate free space
like in older Windows operating systems. How do I do this or is it even
necessary any more? I'm getting into video editing and would like large
hunks of free space for the movie files.

You're correct, it only defragments the files, not consolidate free space. You'll need a 3rd party defragger, such as Perfect Disk.
