Connection works - but IE doesn't?

I installed WinXP on Sunday, overtop of Win98SE - since
then I've been unable to connect to the internet.

I've installed the XP drivers for my network card (D-Link
DFE-538TX) and Network Connections indicates that I have
an "enabled" connection - however, when I start IE it
can't find anything. The status bar reads "Finding site
www.msn.com" and after a moment I get the message that
this page cannot be displayed, "either the server is down
or you need to check your network settings".

I've tried one of my online games, and it reports that
it "can't resolve the address m2.sierra.com" or words to
that effect. Mysteriously, Teamspeak (a voice-over-IP
program) which knows its server's IP address, is able to
connect, so on some level I'm still connected to the rest
of the world...

I've tried repairing the connection, but it fails as it
attempts to renew my IP. I've tried unplugging the modem,
waiting a bit and plugging it back in - no change. Reboot
after that - no change.

Here are some of my properties which I jotted down last
night:
Node type: unknown
IP routing enabled: no
WINS proxy enabled: no

DNS suffix: ed.shawcable.net
Physical description: D-Link DFE-538TX
Physical address: 00-50-B4-C2-4D-53
DHCP: enabled
Autoconfig: enabled
IP: 68.148.31.159
Subnet mask: 255.255.254.0
Default gateway: 68.148.30.1
DHCP server: 64.59.184.40
DNS servers: 64.59.184.13 and 64.59.184.15
WINS server: [blank]

I tried turning off the 'Auto IP address' option (I forget
the exact term) and entered my own IP. I think it also
asked for the subnet mask and default gate, and it
definitely wanted DNS server addresses; I entered
the values above and did another ipconfig, getting the
following:

Autoconfig IP: 169.254.147.239
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: [blank]

A while after trying this, I rebooted and the settings
snapped back to the original 'Auto IP address' mode.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,

You have said a lot about your IP address configuration, but this sounds
like a DNS problem since it connects fine to hosts that do not require
lookups. Is your connection set to obtain DNS information automatically
as well?

I had a bit of a look on Shaws site (based on your DNS suffix..), and i
get this (http://support.shaw.ca/troubleshooting/dhcpxp.htm), indicating
it should work in this totally automatic mode.
