Connection with Exchange Server

We have Outlook 2003 running in our Exchange 2003 environment. Outlook
clients are configure with Offline Caching, so there are large .ost files.
Several of our user have been complaining about a pop-up on the Outlook icon
on the task bar, that mentions something about downloading from the Exchange
server. This is only happening to a handful of users in the organization,
and besides being an annoyance, it has drastically slowed operation of their
Outlook client. Can anyone explain this and a possible solution?

if people are getting lots of email and not opening outlook for a while, it
will take a few seconds to download the new messages. How much time are we
talking about?

Thank for the response dlw. On average it is taking about 4 to 5 minutes per
client, but here is the issue. The users have Outlook open and this is
happening all through out the day. Some users have a large .ost and other
have quite small .ost files, not exceeding 10MB, but the sync time is taking
about the same amount of time. I can understand if it is taking some time
when they first open Outlook in the morning, but not at 3PM when Outlook has
been open all day long.

And, if they have Outlook open, why are they receiving this ballon message
that the client is trying to connect to the Exchange server. They should not
be receiving this message.
