Plun - I don't believe the servers were down, regardless of what is written
in these groups (I understand that one "A.J." at some level of Microsoft
support did say that, but I'm still saying this.)
There was a routing issue. I don't know whether within or outside of
Microsoft's control, but I suspect outside, unless I hear otherwise.
I had no trouble at any time over the weekend reaching the update servers
from home, or from one office I work with. I did have a different office
which showed the symptoms, but by the time I got around to trying to
investigate more deeply, the problem was fixed.
I hear you. Microsoft is big. There are folks who work for the Microsoft
Antispyware team, and they make sure their servers (which they probably don't
personally admin, and are probably not physically near) are working.
There are, presumably network admins as well who look for issues beyond the
server farms, but I don't know how/where/who or anything about that function.
Clearly that job didn't get done right this time around. In fact, if the
message I read tonight is correct, Australia may still be blacked out of
connecting for definitions
