Connection loss with Linksys Router

I am currently experiencing a relatively new problem that I have not been
able to resolve. I have a Windows XP Home edition with SP2 installed on a
home network linked to a Linksys router (BEFSR41) with the most recent
firmware installed. I have PC-cillin Internet Security running with the
firewall enabled.

The problem exists only on one of my three machines. I am losing the
ability to communicate with the router twice a day. I haven't been able to
isolate the exact time but the first drop occurs during the time I am at
work (8:00 am - 5:00 pm) and the second is after going to bed for the
evening (10:00 pm and 5:00 am). The connection to the router can be
reestablished by simply logging off and logging on (a reboot also works but
isn't necessary).

I have tried the following to try to resolve the issue:

1. Exchanged ports with another computer on the router.
2. Installed a separate network card.
3. Turned off PC-cillin.
4. Change the lease timing on the router.
5. Updated the firmware on the router.

On an ipconfig /all and during the failure, everything appears to work
except an internet page can not be displayed nor can I bring up the
configuration page on the router. I can ping successfully everything that
can be pinged (i.e., the router, yahoo.com, my work server, etc.) however
none of the pages can be displayed on the browser. I have tried
unsuccessfully with both Internet Explorer and Netscape. I believe this
began somewhere around the time that I did the SP2 upgrade however, I can't
say absolutely this was the culprit. I do know that it didn't happen
before.

It appears to me to be a machine or router (and probably machine) related
issue but I cannot isolate it much closer than this. I am sure I have left
out some of the things that I have tried to resolve this but just can't
remember all of them. The bad thing is that it takes several hours to see
whether or not things worked or in my case, haven't worked.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, in advance,

Dan Johnson

FWIW, I experienced difficulties both on my laptop and desktop after
installing SP2 that were connection related. I cannot unfortunately be
much more specific but the fact is those troubles disappeared after I
deleted the Noexecute=xxxxx in boot.ini. It is worth a try. Search
Google for this issue and you will better understand the implications.

This is definitely a possibilty. Neither my laptop nor the second desktop
that are both working have SP2 on it so it is a good likelyhood. I will try
it.

Thanks for the information.

Tried the Noexecute=xxxxx change and it didn't help. If anyone hears of
anything else, please pass along.

Sorry it did not work. One more thing: are those machines allowed to go
to stand-by mode? If it is the case, disable stand-by and see if this
keeps occurring.

Nope!!! The hibernate didn't do the trick either. I had an email back from
PC-cillin and they suggested uninstalling the firewall within it but I
haven't had time to do that yet.

If PC-cillin has a firewall, you have got to decide which one to use,
either theirs, or SP2's. Do not have both active. Try disabling one, the
other, and see what happens ...

I have already tried that and even to the extreme of completely uninstalling
PC-cillin. During the time that it was uninstalled, I also had the Windows
firewall disable and enabled but had the same problem with both case
scenarios. I am to the point now (for lack of anything else) looking at
Windows as the culprit. I don't want to waste the time of writing data to
CD's so I am very seriously considering purchasing a new desktop and
downloading the data files from the old hard drive to the new then
reformatting the C drive on the old computer and making it an additional PC
for the house. We have room for it and it gives me a good excuse to buy a
new PC anyway.

I bought my new computer and was in the process of connecting the PC's
through my home network to be able to communicate to extract the data files
off my old computer. I had some difficulties getting everything to work but
did finally get them to "talk" to each other. During the troubleshooting of
that, I deleted the connection on the old problematic desktop and after
doing a new network setup, the connection has not dropped since. Evidently,
there was some corruption in that old connection and simply deleting it,
fixed the problem. Thought you might like to add that to your list of
things not commonly seen.
