Connecting

I have had the weirdest experience while trying to
connect to the internet with both my computers. The
first time I connect (dial up) it will connect no
problem. Then after signing out the phone line goes
dead. If you call the number it shows it is busy.

I called the phone company but they said the lines were
fine. Once I unplug the line from the jack and plug in
back in everything is fine. So, if I try to reconnect
you get a busy signal, message I dialed the number wrong
or no dial tone at all.

I tested all the jacks with a phone and you can call and
call no problem. I hook the computer up and dial in and
the first time it is fine (on more than on occasion it
has no connected at all) and then the second time it
either has no dial tone, busy signal or a message I
dialed wrong.

Has anyone heard of this? Could this be a problem with
my computer since it only happens when I connect the
computers to the phone jack? A virus? Help!!!

It sounds like your modem is not disconnecting properly. If you go into
your modem properties, you can switch logging on and after it next fails
(and you have unplugged the phone line) look the commands listed in the
logfile. You can look up the meaning of these commands by searching for
"Hays commands" in Google.

One thing you might try though is to increase the time between redials
in your modem settings, but to be honest it is more likely a problem
with your modem.
