My laptop (microsoft xp) has a wireless connection to a shared broadband router in the student halls i'm in. I'm tryin to connect my xbox 360 to my laptop with an ethernet cable so i can get on xbox live. The xbox cant find an ip address when it searches and the local area connection says 'limited or no connectivity'. It also says packets are getting sent but not received (this doesn't mean much to me). Can anyone tell me how this setup would work and how to do it without spending £60 on a wireless networkd adapter (slightly poor after buying xbox 360)

Thanks for any advice.

i just wrote out a long reply and accidentally pressed the back button on my mouse ARRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

neways

i connect my xbox to my pc a lot
and heres how i do it:

im not so sure how the 360 works
but somehow get into its network properties on ur tv on ur xbox
now go to default gateway and ip address.. change these manually

these adddresses are just examples its what i use.

in ip address type in 192.168.0.3
in default gateway 192.168.0.1

now thats the xbox sorted

go into pc properites click on the connection make sure its not plugged in just yet.
go into network connections click on your connection u use then on properties then click on TCP/IP protocol.
click on properties now click on 'use following ip address'

now WATCH carefully,

in ip address enter 192.168.0.1
in default gateway enter 192.168.0.3

U SEE IT IS REVERSED!
make sure its opposites otherwise it WILL NOT WORK

also note that if u got ne wireless connections up or nething else u may find conflicts in which case i suggestr u either use different addresses or u disconnect from that one!

good luck let me know how it goes.

A message is coming up on my laptop saying the ip address is already in use by something else. Still not sure what packets are but 2 have been received now. Does that mean there was a connection for a while?

Forget above message, your method worked like a charm, i just apparently dont know what i'm doing. the next problem though is the DNS server...? how do i go about finding this?
