I am trying to connect a Win XP Pro PC to my LAN. All of
the other PC's on the LAN are running Home. The Pro PC
can see the network but cannot browse it. None of the
Home PC's can see it. Please is there anyone out there
that has a clue as to why? Or can help me to get this to
work. I am setting up a LAN Party right now and this is
the one that I need to work because I will be using it as
a "server" for game files. please help.

Greetings James,

1. Make sure the XP's firewall is disabled. It will block file and printer
sharing by default. If you installed a third party firewall such as
ZoneAlarm, Sygate or Norton, make sure it is properly configured for the
network.

2. Ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Details here.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

3. Use TCP/IP as the only network protocol. Uninstall NetBEUI or IPX/SPX if
they are present. Make sure you are using the same network protocol on all
machines.

Try testing your network and see if you can access the other computer and
shares this way.

Click Start | Run, then type one of these commands in the box and click OK:

\\computer

\\computer\share

\\IP-address

\\IP-address\share

I forgot to put in all of these details..

All of the PC's have been checked to make sure that none
of them is running a firewall. Even the crapy on that
comes with XP. I am useing a Netgear Switch.
Checked to see if Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled. It is
now.
Still did not work.

Tried accessing the WinXP Pro pc by doing \\name of
computer. Sill nothing.

Checked to see if SFS was enabled. It is. Qos packet
scheduler, TCP/IP, File shareing, MS networking are only
things running DHCP is enabled.

I tried to have it pull an IP from the switch and it will
not. we are trying to resolve that issue now..

Any other suggestions are more that welcome.. Thanks for
your help Eric.

Now we have dicovered that the PC will not release or
renew it's IP Address. any help with that? Tried release
and renew but it gives us this error - an operation was
attemted on something that is not a socket.

Please help!!

hi i had the same socket problem, i reinstalled xp in order to fix it..........bear
