connecting two laptops

I have an old (5 yrs) Gateway solo running win 2k, and a
new Dell Latitude running win XP Pro. I have they both
are able to connect to the same network. I need to
connect the two of them so I can easily get files I want
from the Gateway to the Dell. I've tried connecting them
with a rj45 cable, and running the Network wizard, but I
cannot see either of the computers from the other one.
When I disconnect the cable both of them "Sees" the
disconnect. Any help on what I need to do to get them to
communicate would be greatly appreciated.

I know if you have an XP Pro system and a non-XP Pro system, you need to run the Network Connection Wizard on the XP Pro system first, and at the end it has you make a floppy for the non-XP Pro system. You then put the floppy in the non-XP system and run the wizard from the floppy. That should do it :)
