Connecting to wireless internet(sort-of)

I want to boot off my nephew's router Yes with his permission, as long as I
help pay the tab. We live next door to each other. My problem being is that I
can't pick up the signal in my place because I live in a mobil home. I have a
N usb adapter, plenty strong enough, you can pick the signal up right outside
of the window with the laptop, but the minute you bring it inside it looses
the signal even though I place it right in front of the window(also where my
desktop lives). I am desperate for a solution. Anyone out there have any
ideas, I would be forever grateful. Because of where we live there are only
so many lines for highspeed and I ain't one of the liucky ones to get it I
only have dial-up right now and we all know how fast that is. Thanks

Does nephew have a wireless-n router? If not, your wireless-n adapter
does you no good.

The usual cure for reception problems like yours is to use better
antennas (on both ends). That's a problem, however, with wireless-n,
because it uses MIMO antenna technology. See

Alternatively, build a (non-metallic) weather-proof enclosure and mount
your adapter outside the window. Try to keep the USB cable as short as
possible, and in no case longer than 5 meters.

Your mobile home probably has a lot of metal in the structure, and that just
does a swell job of reducing wireless signal.

So, you have a couple of choices. You can add an external antenna to a
wireless card that allows this, though most USB adapters don't.

If he lives next door, you can simply get a long cable. You can buy 100'
cables for around $50 if you look, or you can buy a 1000' spool of cable for
around $100. You'll need ends and the tool to install them; some spools
come with these. I generally use female ends on this kind of cable (these
often don't require special tools), and then a couple of patch cords to
connect to the router and to the laptop. You do want to run the cable in
as protected an area as you can get. If you want, you can connect a
wireless router in your place, and be wireless there with much less problem
of signal strength.
