We purchased a used computer for our children. It had
windows 98 adn the previous owners had AOL. The kids
upgraded to Windows XP and tried to get on line with MSN
and other internet access and keep getting that there is
no dial tone. However if they tried the previous
installed AOL they could connect but not log on. They
also connected the telephone through the modemn and
receive a dial tone and connection. Any suggestion?
Thank you

Is MSN your current internet provider?

If so, right click My Computer. Click the second tab from
the left, and then click the Device Manager button. Look
around until you see a "Network Adapters" tab. Click the
little addition sign next to the tab. There is most likely
an "AOL Adapter" tab there. Delete this. Restart your
computer, and try connecting to the internet.

If MSN is NOT your current internet provider, then please
reply with the name of your provider.

Oh, and if MSN IS your current provider, and the above
does or does not work, please reply back =)

check for a modem driver for xp and get the latest one
for whatever modem you have.

if that doesnt fix it, go to support.microsoft.com and
type into search error 680 and 678

there are three or so articles for you to try for xp.

depending upon the age of the modem/computer

a clean install may be the best answer.
