Connecting to News Servers

Is there a way to set WIN MAIL so that it doesn't open a post when I connect
to a server? In Outlook Express IIRC when I connected to a server it didn't
open anything until I actually selected a message. WIN MAIL seems to open
almost any post on the server at random. It's not the last post I read and
I'm not even sure it's one that I have read in the past--it just seems
pretty random. I'd just like it to sit there with the preview pane blank
until I select a message. Is there any way to have that happen?

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. That wasn't exactly what I had in mind. I
like having the preview pane but I just don't want it to preview a message
until I select it.

No way to stop it from doing that.

This was reported as a BUG very early in the beta testing of WM.

MS reported that "it was by design", more requests for this regression to be
changed have been met with deaf ears.

LOL! "it was by design" sounds a lot like what I say when I tinker with
something that's broken and all of a sudden it starts working again. IOW,
"We don't know what we did to get it like that so don't ask us to change it
back!"

Do you know how it picks what message to show in the preview pane? I can't
see any pattern. I know it's not the last message that I looked at in the
particular newsgroup.

It selects the first unread message.

When I click on a link in an email message the following pops up in a window
'Windows cannot find 'http"//11go.microsoft.com/?linlid=7988759'. then the
link appears as a tab in the taskbar. How can I correct this>

Hmmm! I've been trying to watch how it's been acting as I move to various
newsgroups and there doesn't seem to be any consistency. One time it'll
open a message that I've read, one next time it'll open a message that I
haven't read, another time it'll open the first message that I've read in a
thread that contains unread messages, and still another time it'll open a
message in a thread that contains no unread messages. I can't see any
pattern at all.

For me, if I've selected the Hide Read Messages option for that
newsgroup, it shows the first unread message. If I've selected the
Show All Messages option for that newsgroup instead, it's less
consistent about which message opens first.

And if you switch back and forth frequently between Hide Read
and Show All (as I do), it seems to lose all track of where to place
the focus.
