connecting to neighbor's wireless net

G

George

(if it matters, XP Pro, Zyxel G-302 wireless adapter, D-link DI-524
router.)

The ppl next-door have an unsecured network, whose name ("default")
happens to alphabetically preceed ours. Our PC keeps connecting to
their router on boot. I can manually override this, but that gets old.

The Windows ('wireless zero'?) config allows selection of which network
we connect to. But, the adapter always starts up under the control of
"Zyxel G-302 Wireless Adapter Utility", which seems to be totally
promiscuous. This utility does have a checkbox "use wireless zero
config". That works, but only until the next boot.

The WZC service is set to Automatic; but, it comes up stopped after
boot.

Any clues would be appreciated.

TIA,
George

Hi

Log to Zyxel support and check for an updated Utility. Otherwise, look at
Windows startup and take the Zyxell startup application out. You can try to
do with this, http://www.ezlan.net/infestation#startup

In addition, make sure that your Router is set to a Wireless Channel
different then the neighbor's Wireless.

George,

1) Setup your computers to use only one WiFi client.

2) Make your network a preferred network, and de select "Automatically connect
to non-preferred networks".

Thanks to both of you.

I had a little trouble with some of those ideas, so I went back and
looked at the Zyxel utility. Oops. All I had to do was remove the
unwanted network from the 'active pool'. After that, everything is OK.

Thanks again,
G
